A blog is one of the ways in which many people make money online. Some people make a very good income from blogging and it is possible that you can become one of these people. It is easy to get started blogging and making money, but like all kinds of businesses, you do have to give it time. With the numerous amount of information available online, the important thing is to take steps to get your blog noticed.

A blog is basically a website. I guess the difference is that on a static website the content tends to remain the same whereas a blog usually has constantly changing content. With a blog you can write what you want when you want and just post it on the page. You don’t have to spend time with html, coding, or design issues as the tools available today are very good.

STEP 1: Choose a Topic or Niche

I will cover this area briefly but you can learn more on choosing a niche for your blog or affiliate website in our Affiliate Marketing section.

This is the most important part of setting up a money-making blog. You do have to engage in some preparatory work to find the right niche and the right keywords. There are many free keyword tools online that you can use to determine the viability of various niches and keywords but I suggest the Google keyword tool. The keywords are the main words that will bring visitors to your site and the way by which the search engines will scour and rank the pages.

Use the keyword tool to search for the word or phrase that you would like to start with. The results will show you how many people searched for that term last month from your local area and from other parts of the world.

There are certain things that you have to check in the results to determine whether or not you should stick with this topic. The first is the number of searchers and the second thing is the competition you will be facing. If there are already an abundance of web pages on the word or topic, then you should either abandon it in favor of another topic or try to narrow it down to make a more specialized niche.

You can take some of the keywords that show up in the result and further look into searching each of these to obtain a list of other suitable keywords.

You will also need to name the blog. This should be as close to the topic as possible and include the main keywords.

I will not go into detail on naming your blog in this post but this topic will be covered in detail in the Affiliate Marketing section of this site.

STEP 2. Find a Blog Hosting Site

Free Blog Hosting:

If you are completely new to blogging and you are not sure how this is going to work out for you, then the best way to get started is to use a free blogging site. One of the easiest to use is www.blogger.com. WordPress.com also has a free blogging site, but you are not able to use affiliate links on the free blog so that’s not much use to you starting off. There are many others that you can use too, such as:

Read through the terms and conditions of each free blog site so that you understand your rights and responsibilities. Then decide which one you think would be the best one for you to choose.

Now that you know which free hosting site you are going to use it is time to register and set up your account. It is important to know the rules and regulations associated with the free blog service because if you do not adhere to the conditions, the site will have the right to deactivate your account and your blog will no longer exist. This is true of the free blogging sites, but not the ones for which you have to pay a fee.

Paid Blog Hosting

You can also go the way of having your own blog set up on a paid hosting account. This is by far a better way to go, but you will have to pay a monthly or annual fee for the hosting service. One of the main differences is that you will have your own domain name rather than have the name of your blog associated with a free site. This is really the best way to go if you are serious about making money with a blog.

If you decide to follow this route, then you will need these things to get your blog set up:

  • Register a domain name:
  • I prefer to use either NameCheap.com or GoDaddy.com to register my domain names. Both are very inexpensive. I do like GoDaddy’s customer service better than NameCheap’s but both seem to be good.

  • Set up and pay for hosting:
  • Hosting is very inexpensive nowadays. You should be able to get a hosting account for around $6.95 per month. I suggest either HostGator or BlueHost. What I like about both of these services is they allow you to set up unlimited amount of sites on the same hosting account all with no additional fees.

  • Set up your domain on your hosting account:
  • Once your hosting account is set up, you will need to login to CPanel and set up your domain name on your account.

This short video below should help with adding a domain to cpanel:

  • Set up blogging platform:
  • There are a number of blogging platforms but I prefer WordPress. It is the most popular and by far the easiest to use.

So once your domain is set up on your hosting account it is time to install the WordPress blogging platform on your domain.

From the main page of your CPanel account, scroll down and click QUICKINSTALL or FANTASTICO DELUXE on HostGator or SIMPLE SCRIPTS on BlueHost.

The short video below will help you learn how to install WordPress on your blog.

Step 3: Start Writing Content

Once you decide on the specific niche and keywords, set up your domain, hosting and blog, you have to start writing the blog content. It is essential that you have original content and not copy the material from another site. The more original the better. It also helps if you can add photos or graphics to highlight or illustrate some of the points that you make in the blog post.

Now, you don’t have to be a writer to run a blog and make money. You can hire very good writers for around $7 per 500 word article.

Once your have your first article written, post the first entry to your new blog. Make a commitment to make regular posts. You may not be able to do this every day, but you should make an effort to post at least once or twice a week.

Step 4: Monetize Your Blog

You won’t make any money by simply having a blog and adding content. You have to monetize the blog in order to start generating revenue. One of the most common ways of monetizing a blog is to post Google ads on the site. In order to do this you have to apply for a Google Adsense account. You must have your blog up and running before you can do this though. Simply follow all the instructions for Google Adsense to get started. Once you have the ads up and running on the site, be careful not to click on any of the ads because this could get your Adsense account deactivated.

Another popular method to monetizing a blog is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing involves marketing an existing product on behalf of its maker or distributor. It can essentially be compared to working in a retail store and earning a commission or percentage of every sale that you make.

You simply choose a product or products that you want to market. Next, do an online search to find companies that make or distribute those products and have an affiliate marketing program that you can join. You simply add the affiliate code to your blog and every time someone buys through you, a commission is generated!

I get into more detail in my affiliate marketing tutorials in the AFFILIATE MARKETING SECTION section of this website.

To learn the secrets to become a successful affiliate marketer, I suggest buying my “Rapid Money Formula” membership. This is the most complete course ever released on affiliate marketing and making money online. In this 28 video coaching series I reveal everything you will need to succeed in affiliate marketing, blogging, and making money online. I also share many crucial secrets that most affiliate marketing courses do not cover and each will save you time and make you money!

Step 5: Promote your blog

You have to promote your blog so that others will know that it exists. You can easily do this by sending the link to all your friends and family and ask them to send it to their friends. This will help you get started generating traffic, but it is not all that you can do.

Make use of Facebook to promote the blog. For example, post a link on your Facebook page every time up update the blog. If you don’t have a Twitter account, sign up for Twitter free of charge. Start following other Twitter users and there is a good chance that they will reciprocate by following you. Then you can Tweet your blog once or twice a day and in this way have people you don’t even know start to check out what you have written.

The most important thing you can do to market your blog is to do “SEO” or “Search Engine Optimization”. This will eventually get your blog to rank in the top results on the search engines. This takes time and patience though so be prepared.

For more detailed information on Search Engine Optimization, please visit the Affiliate Marketing section of this site.

Now that you have the basics to making money with a blog, it is important to remember that the most critical thing you can do to succeed is to persevere . Give yourself time to learn the steps necessary for success.

KEY: Don’t expect to make money immediately. It is going to take time.

If you really want to make money blogging, decide now that you won’t give up until you become one of the top bloggers online!

Hope this helps,

Great tips Scott. When it comes to making money online, blogging is always on the list but its not that easy to make money from blogs. Your blog should be attractive and consistent enough. And of course we have to work hard to reach more people because more people simply means more earnings coming in.

I love this blog! My daughter, Anne, is fond of blogging. I thought that it is just a total waste of time. Anne always insists that she could earn money from it. This blog is really informative. Most certainly, I will also try blogging soon. I hope Scott will continue to update and give us more tips on blogging. Thanks Scott

“Good day!

Scott, I believe I am in the same boat with Martha. Like her, I have a teenage daughter who is so fond of blogging. I know she is earning from those blogs sometimes but there are times she would complain because she got so hooked on it that she have no more time for her other activities. Do you have any suggestion? I want to help her without pleading her to stop outright. More power!”

Scott says:

Hi Melinda:

I understand. It is so easy to get caught up in blogging that you lose sight of other things.

I would suggest that your daughter set a schedule for when she will be blogging and working on the blog and when she will take time off. That is what I do.

Hope this helps.

Howdy would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. I’m looking for something unique. I hope you could help me with that.

Hi Jerry:

I am using WordPress as I believe it is the best and most supported blogging platform. Of course others may disagree but I find WordPress to be so easy to learn and use.

Right Topic is absolutely important. If you are a newbie, test the waters first. How? Know your interest because I bet you have good pool of resources either from your mind or your drawer. Next, try to float your idea using the social networking site like Twitter and Facebook. If you manage to have several feedback and likes/unlike, then that surely appeals to people. Then try to make a draft before you post it as a blog!

Is it feasible to use free blog hosting sites? Do you have suggestions? Regarding monetizing my blog, can I monitor the volume of views or traffic I am getting? I plan to create a blog then asked local businessmen to use such to market their product within the city. I prefer to focus on blog topics focused on our city’s events. Wish you well!

Hi Blithe:

Yes, you can use free blogging sites to make money blogging but if you are going to do this I would suggest you make sure that you can still get your own domain name as it looks more professional. I think in order to use your own domain name on these free blogging services you will need to upgrade to a paid account.

Now, if you use Blogger.com, you can use a custom domain name but still have free hosting which is great.

I always choose to use my own domain name and set up my blog with my own wordpress installation as it gives me the most control.

wow , I’m glad that you replied. So your suggestion is I should get a paid domain. I may get one but I hope to get an affordable rate. Remember I’m a newbie, I must ensure revolving cash flow

Getting your own domain is very inexpensive. You can get them on Godaddy for $7.49 per year if you use a Coupon code.

This blog prompted me to searched the net. I am excited to try this. Unfortunately there are so much info out there and I don’t know which are truly useful. What I do next? Should I open an account? How can I make sure I have reliable partner?

Emman Simon says:

How are you Danna? I am new to blogging too! I’m into this for a couple of months. The suggestions enumerated above are great. You may try them first as listed You will just find answers along the way. You will realize later that blogging somehow created a world in the cyberspace. The rules are not yet fixed so you are free to experiment. If you are not confident then look for someone who is into blogging and make him/her your partner. Do not think of making money in blogging yet, you will have enough as soon as you can claim yourself a certified blogger.

Hi All!

If you want to earn more in blogging, then work like a professional blogger. You may approach your government agencies to help it promote any of its program thru blogging. I realized this because my friend from a local tourism office asked me to do a promotional blogging on a local event.

Blogging is one of the best ways how to make money online. But at the same time is the toughest one and it takes very long to start making revenue from blog. If people want to succeed in blogging they have to be clever, making sure that your content are unique and really interesting, be enthusiastic in blogging niche and very very persistent.
